There are no limits on mounting orientation and mounting clearance is not re- quired. Maximum insertion length of the 3mm screws is 0.15" (3.81mm). Physical Connection - AT Interface ---------------------------------- Both power and control signals are supplied to the drive through a single 44 pin cable. Please note that separate power is supplied to the logic and motor circuits to minimize noise coupling. Maximum length of this 44 pin cable is 18 inches (457 mm) since it is TTL driven. Two drives may be daisy chained on a single cable, however, the cable remains restricted to 18 inches. Recommended mating connectors are as follows: 44-pin flex cable mating connector: Dupont 86456-044 or equivalent PCBA mount connector: Dupont 86455-0449 or equivalent Electrical Description - AT Interface ------------------------------------- All signal levels are TTL compatible. A logic "1" is from 2.0 volts to 5 volts. A logic "0" is from 0.0 volts to 0.7 volts. The interface between the drive adapter and the drive is termed the "Host Interface". The set of registers in the I/O space of the Host is known as the "Task File". All signals on the Host Interface have the prefix Host. All negativ- ely active signals are prefixed with a "-" designation. All positiv- ely signals are prefixed with a "+" designation. Signals whose source is the Host are "outbound" and those whose source is the drive are "inbound". +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | Pin | Signal | Pin | Signal | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 01 | -Host Reset | 02 | Gnd | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 03 | +Host Data 7 | 04 | +Host Data 8 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 05 | +Host Data 6 | 06 | +Host Data 9 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 07 | +Host Data 5 | 08 | +Host Data 10 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 09 | +Host Data 4 | 10 | +Host Data 11 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 11 | +Host Data 3 | 12 | +Host Data 12 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 13 | +Host Data 2 | 14 | +Host Data 13 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 15 | +Host Data 1 | 16 | +Host Data 14 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 17 | +Host Data 0 | 18 | +Host Data 15 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 19 | Gnd | 20 | Key | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 21 | Not Connected | 22 | Gnd | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 23 | -Host IOW | 24 | Gnd | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 25 | -Host IOR | 26 | Gnd | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 27 | Not Used | 28 | Not Connected | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 29 | Not Used | 30 | Gnd | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 31 | +Host IRQ | 32 | -Host IO16 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 33 | +Host Address 1 | 34 | -Host PDIAG | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 35 | +Host Address 0 | 36 | +Host Address 2| +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 37 | -Host CS0 | 38 | -Host CS1 | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 39 | -Host Active/Slave| 40 | Gnd | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 41 | +5 Volt Logic | 42 | +5 Volt Motor | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ | 43 | Gnd | 44 | +AT -XT | +------+-------------------+------+----------------+ Cabling ------- All 2.5 inch AT/IDE interface drives use a 44 pin male connector that incorporates power, control, and data signals. This configurations differs from the 3.5 inch IDE drives which employ a 40 pin signal connector and separate 4 pin power connector. Therefore, if you are replacing an existing 3.5 inch drive and are faced with a 40 pin connector, you will need an adapter card. (Recommended mate connector is DUPONT #86456-044.) If your system did not previously have an IDE interface, you will need to add a standard adapter card, such as the one shown below. Since power and ground are present at the interface connector, damage could be induced by offset or upside down connection. Please ensure that pin 20 of your system's female connector is properly keyed. Air Filtration System --------------------- Inside the HDA, air is recirculated through a .3 micron filter, providing a clean environment for the recording heads and disks. Additionally, a pressure compensation filter is utilized o control air flow during altitude or thermal changes. Drive Mechanism --------------- A brushless DC motor rotates the spindle at 2087 RPM. ********************************************************************** F E A T U R E S ********************************************************************** AREAL MD-2060/2080 USER MANUAL REVISION 1.0, OCTOBER 1,1991 Introduction ------------ The Areal Model MD-2060/2080 are 2.5 inch, high capacity, ruggedized, high performance, low power disk drive. By design, it is idel for notebook, laptop, or portable applications. Both units incorporate the IBM PC-AT/XT Task File control logic and require only chip select decode logic to allow bus connection. This logic is included in a number of commercially available adapter boards. Key Features ------------ - AT or XT Modes of Operation - Automatic Error Correction and Retries - Automatic Microprocessor Controlled Diagnostics - Buffer Size 32 KB - Embedded Servo System - Extremely Low Power (5 volt only) - Fast Startup - Internal Air Filtration System - Master/Slave Combatibility - Programmable Low Power Modes - Universal Translation - 125 G Non-Operation Shock Tolerance Error Correction ---------------- For data integrity a 56 bit ECC polynomial capable of correcting single burst errors up to 21 bits is employed. Single burst errors up to 56 bit and double burst errors up to 41 bits can be detected.
