For remote operation of this feature it is only necessary to connect pin 8 to ground. The state of this pin is only monitored on removal of the internal reset to the drive after power has been applied to the drive. P4 Parity ---------- 9-10 CLOSED Enable parity When a jumper is connected across pins 9 and 10, the drive will enable parity checking. The use of this jumper excludes the enabling/ disabling of parity by the use of the MODE SELECT command. For remote operation of this feature it is only necessary to connect pin 10 to ground. ********************************************************************** I N S T A L L ********************************************************************** RODIME RO3139TP/RO3259TP PRODUCT SPECIFICATION PRO 00244 REV.1 1991 Notes on Installation ===================== Drive Mounting and Installation ------------------------------- When installing the drive into an enclosure, the breather holes on the drive top cover must not be obstructed. At least 0.1 inch clearance must be provided between the top cover and the host frame. There must be at least 0.1 inch clearance between the drive housing and the host frame to ensure functional vibration isolation. The drive may be mounted in any orientation and is supplied complete with threaded mounting bracket. The drive is mounted using 6/32 UNC screws with maximum engagement of 0.25 inch. The drive installation must provide adequate air flow to ensure that the maximum casting temperature of the head/disk assembly does not exceed 60*C. Physical Description -------------------- SCSI devices are daisy-chained together using a common cable. Both ends of the cable are terminated. All signals are common between SCSI devices. The RO 3000TP uses single-ended drivers and receivers, which allow a maximum cable length of six metres. Cable Requirements ------------------ A 50-conductor flat cable or 25-signal twisted-pair cable shall be used. The maximum cable length shall be 6.0 metres (19.7 ft). A stub length of no more than 0.1 metres (3.94 in) is allowed off the mainline interconnect within any connected equipment. A minimum conductor size of 28 AWG shall be employed to minimize noise effects and ensure proper distribution of optional terminator power. Connector Requirements ---------------------- The drive connector is a 50-conductor connector consisting of two rows of 25 male pins with adjacent pins 2.54 mm (0.1 in) apart. The cable connector shall be a 50-conductor connector consisting of two rows of 25 female contacts with adjacent contacts 2.54 mm (0.1 in) apart. The 3M P/N 3425-3000 cable connector is recommended. The power connector is a 4 pin AMP Mate-N-Lock mounted on the end of the PCB. The recommended mating connector is AMP P/N 1-480424-0 (or equivalent) socket housing using AMP pin P/N 350078-4 (or equivalent). Electrical Description ---------------------- All assigned signal are terminated with 220 ohms to +5V (nominal) and 330 ohms to ground at each end of the cable. All signals use open- collector drivers. The terminators are removable. Output Characteristics ---------------------- Each signal driven by the RO 3000TP has the following output characteristics when measured at the drive's connector: Signal assertion = 0.0 volts dc to 0.4 volts dc. Minimum driver output capacity = 48 milliamps (sinking) at 0.5 volts dc. Signal negation = 2.5 volts dc to 5.25 volts dc. Input Characteristics --------------------- Each signal received by the RO 3000TP shall have the following input characteristics when measured at the drive's connector: Signal true = 0.0 volts dc to 0.8 volts dc. Maximum toatl input load = -0.4 milliamp at 0.4 volts dc. Signal false = 2.0 volts dc to 5.25 volts dc. Minimum input hysteresis = 0.2 volts dc. Terminator Power (Optional) --------------------------- The RO 3000TP is configured to supply terminator power, (TERMPWR), with the following characteristics: VTERM = 4.0 volts dc to 5.25 volts dc. 800 milliamps minimum source drive capability. 1.0 milliamp maximum sink capability. SCSI Bus -------- Communication on the SCSI bus is allowed between only two SCSI devices at any given time. There is a maximum of eight SCSI devices. This drive has a fixed physical format of 512 bytes per sector, with up to 42 sectors per track. A microprocessor is used to control various drive functions including command execution, and head positioning. The positioning of the data heads is accomplished using a rotary voice-coil actuator with a dedicated servo surface plus embedded servo data offering improved positioning accuracy at high track densities. The drive communicates with a host computer system via the Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) bus. The following features are supported: - 64K Bytes dual ported FIFO data buffer, configured as a intelligent cache - Will support a logical sector size of 512 bytes - Disconnected operations with arbitration for reselection - Command linking - ECC error detection and correction using 48 bit polynominal - Average data transfer rate of 1.25 MBytes/second - 1 : 1 interleave factor - Operation with arbitrating and non-arbitrating hosts - Extended SCSI command set - Diagnostics and error reporting - Hardware parity link option - Wait spin-up link option - Low power standby mode when data access not occurring - Frequency Locking with Hall-less DC motor - Buffer ratio disconnects supported Defect Handling --------------- Disc defects are handled by the RO 3000TP using a sector sparing technique. During manufacture the drive is formatted using a format control code of 1EH. After this format, the drive allows the initiator access to all physical sectors. The drive is tested in this mode and any defective sectors are entered into a list known as the Primary Defect List or P-List. The P-List is stored along with the G-LIST in sectors 2-5 and 18-21 of the special Maintenance Track. This track is physically Cylinder -1, Head 0 and is NOT part of the logical address space normally available to the user. The P-List can only be altered or erased by reformatting the maintenance track (Command E1H) or reformatting the entire drive (Command 04H) using format control codes 1EH or 16H. LED Error Codes --------------- Under certain fault conditions, the following error codes will appear on the SELECT LED on the front panel. A four bit binary code is used (long flash = 1, short flash = 0) with the most significant bit occuring first. HEX CODE Definition 01 The drive has detected that the spindle motor speed is out of tolerance ( 10%). 06 After stepping the maximum number of cylinders, the drive could not achieve correct track zero status. 07 The spindle motor did not start at power up. 08 Spindle motor failed initial 1% speed check at power up. 0A No track crossing signal during a seek. 0B No servo data. 0C +12V supply failure. 0D Hardware Interrupt Error. All the above error codes are designatd FATAL, and resetting of the drive can only be accomplished by powering off, then on again. If the drive has a FATAL error, it will switch off power to both the voice coil and spindle motors and flash the fatal error code on the SELECT LED on the front panel. The drive will still respond to commands sent across the SCSI interface, but will not execute any of them except TEST DRIVE READY, INQUIRY or REQUEST SENSE. Access Time ----------- Single cylinder: 5 ms (max) Average cylinder seek: 18 ms (typ) 20 ms (max) All cylinders: 38 ms (typ) 42 ms (max) Head switch time: 4 ms Average latency: 8.33ms (when accessing data not stored in the buffer) Magnetic Field -------------- There shall be no source of constant magnetic field which yields more than 0.0005 Tesla measured in the location occupied by the magnetic heads when the drive is installed. Data Transfer Rate ------------------ Disk Data Rate Outer Zone - 12 MBits/sec Inner Zone - 10 MBits/sec SCSI Transfer Rate Average - 1.25 Mbytes/sec Maximum - 5 Mbytes/sec Service Goals ------------- No preventative maintenance is required and there are no adjustments on the drive. The repairs that may be effected on-site are replace- ment of the electronics board. The mean time to repair (MTTR) includ- ing initial verification is 0.25 hours.
