Performance and error rate stay within specification limits even if the drive is operated in other orientations from which it was formatted. For reliable operation, it is recommended to mount the drive in a system securely enough to prevent excessive motion or vibration of the drive during seek operation or spindle rotation by using appropriate screws or equivalent mounting instruments. Drive level vibration test and the shock test are to be conducted with the drive attached to the table by using four bottom screws (6-32 UNC). Recommended screw torque to be applied to mounting screws is 0.6 - 1.0 Nm (6 - 10 kg*cm). Identification Labels --------------------- The following labels are affixed to every hard disk drive shipped from the manufacturing location in accordance with appropriate hard disk drive assembly drawing. - A label contaning the IBM logo, IBM part number and the statement "Made by IBM Japan Ltd.". - A label containing the drive model number, date code, formatted capacity, place of manufacture, and UL/CSA/TUV logos. - A bar code label containing the drive serial number. - An user designed label per agreement. The labels may be integrated with the other labels. Cabling ------- The maximum cable length from the host system to the HDD, plus the circuit pattern length in the host system, cannot exceed 45.7 cm. Interface Logic Signal Levels ----------------------------- The interface logic signal have the following electrical specifications: Inputs: Input High Voltage 2.0 V min. Input Low Voltage 0.8 V max. Outputs: Output High Voltage 2.4 V min. Output Low Voltage 0.5 V max. There is a choice of 2 power connections to this drive. One DC power connector is designed to mate with AMP part 1-480424-0 (using AMP pins P/N 350078-4) strip or (part 61173-4) loose piece, or their equivalents. The other (3 pin) DC power connector is designed to mate with MOLEX 5480-03 (using MOLEX pins 5479). Equivalent connectors may be used. The drive uses single-ended drivers and receivers. The connector is designed to mate with 3M part 3417-7000 or equivalent. Note: It is intended that the hard disk drive should only be in electrical contact with the chassis of the PC at a designated set of mounting holes. Other electrical contact may degrade error rate performance. As a result of this, it is recommended that there should be no metal contact to the hard disk drive except at the mounting holes or the side rails into which the mounting holes are tapped. Addressing of HDD Registers --------------------------- The host addresses the drive through a set of registers called the Task File. These registers are mapped into the host's I/O space. Two chip select lines (-HCS0 and HCS1) and three address lines (HA 00-02) are used to select one of these registers, while a -HIOR or -HIOW is provided at the specified time. At the completion of any command except Execute Drive Diagnostics, the contents of this register are valid always even if ERR = 0 in the status register. Following a power on, a reset, or completion of an Execute Drive Diagnostic command, this register contains a diagnostic code. Bit Definitions BBK Bad Block. BBK = 1 indicates a bad block mark was detected in the requested sector's ID field. UNC Uncorrectable Data Error. UNC = 1 indicates an uncorrectable data error has been encountered. IDNF(IDN) ID Not Found. IDN = 1 indicates the requested sector's ID field could not be found. ABRT(ABT) Aborted Command. ABT = 1 indicates the requested command has been aupported to a drive status error or an invalid parameter in an output register. TK0NF Track 0 Not Found. T0N = 1 indicates track 0 was not found (T0N) during a Recalibrate command. AMNF(AMN) Address Mark Not Found. AMN = 1 indicates the data address mark has not been found after finding the correct ID field for the requested sector. Cable Noise Interference ------------------------ To avoid any degradation of performance throughput or error rate when the interface cable is routed on top or comes in contact with the HDA assembly, the drive must be grounded electrically to the system frame by four screws. The common mode noise or voltage level difference between the system frame and power cable ground or AT interface cable ground should b ein the allowable level specified in the power requirement section. Unit Sound Power Level Testing ------------------------------ Sound power emission levels are measured according to ISO 7779. Shipping Zone and Lock ---------------------- A dedicated "shipping" (or "landing") zone on the disk, not on the data area of the disk, is provided to protect the disk data during shipping, movement, or storage. At power down, the heads are auto- matically parked and a head locking mechanism secures the heads in this zone. Buffering Operation (Look-ahead/Write cache) -------------------------------------------- In order to improve the total performance, the drive utilizes its own buffer for lookahead. The total of 96KB of the buffer is divided into three segmented blocks. Those three segments are managed intelligently to obtain the best performance. Tt = published random seek time T1 = time for the drive to rotate by half a revolution ********************************************************************** G E N E R A L ********************************************************************** IBM DALA-3540 APPLICATION NOTE: Deskstar DALA-3540 drives and ATAPI CD-ROM drives ------------------------------------------------------------------- We are aware of reports of problems with applications of Deskstar drives with ATAPI CD-ROM drives, where the CD-ROM cannot be detected by its driver at boot time. These problems are occurring because of non-compliances in the ATA implementation by the CD-ROM manufacturers. Our laboratories have investigated several CD-ROM drives, and have determined that several ATAPI suppliers have not complied in their timing of the -DASP line, used for slave drive detection after a reset. Incorrect timing of -DASP can cause the Deskstar DALA-3540 drive, as a master, to fail to recognise the presence of the slave. The incompatibility being discussed only occurs when the hard drive and the CD-ROM are sharing one bus. Dual bus Enhanced-IDE systems where the hard drive and ATAPI CD-ROM are on separate buses are not affected. ATAPI implementation -------------------- The ATAPI implementation of a CD-ROM interface has only emerged into the marketplace in the last 6 months. There are several recognised problems associated with the total compliance of these drives with the ATA specification, which are still being addressed by changes, and the implementation cannot be regarded as stable. DASP timing ----------- The ATA spec defines -DASP (device active, slave present) as a time multiplexed signal which indicates that a device is active, or that a slave is present. The signal has an open collector output, and each device has a 10K ohm pull-up resistor. During power on initialisation, or after -RESET has been negated, the -DASP will be deasserted by both devices within 1ms, then the slave will assert -DASP within 400ms to show that it is present. The master is expected to allow up to 450 ms for the slave to assert -DASP. The non-compliant ATAPI CD-ROM drives are asserting -DASP, but are deasserting it within 450 ms of -RESET being negated, where this should have been held until either a command was accepted, or 31 seconds had elapsed. The Deskstar DALA-3540 drive was designed to check -DASP at 450ms, which is compliant with the ATA specification, but at that time, the non-compliant CD-ROM drives had deasserted -DASP, and were not visible to be recognised as slaves.
